It’s parasite season! How to protect yourself and your family…

Parasite season has started with a bang!

It's true! We are seeing so many cases of parasite infections in the clinic at the moment, and it all lines up as parasite season starts in May!

I'll be honest, the parasite season has leaked out into the rest of the year, it seems as our western diet lowers the amount of diversity in our gut microbiome that we are becoming more susceptible to parasite infections all year round.
Regardless, there are effective steps you can take to preventing parasite infections for you and your family. But first, what are the signs of a parasite infection that you can look for in yourself and in your family?
Signs of a parasite infection include:
- Gut bloating and cramping
- Change in stools frequency, texture and colour
- Itching and/or redness around the anus
- Craving specific foods like sugar and junk food
- Always hungry and eating more than usual
- A different taste on the tongue or tongue feeling or looking swollen and/or greasy

If you suspect that you or someone you know has a parasite infection here are some effective ways to fix it:
- Take an anti-parasitic herbal mix like Parex or Para 1 daily for 2 weeks
- Take combantrum from the chemist (especially good for kids) be aware that this medicine only treats some forms of parasites and may not effectively treat all types of parasites.
- Consider doing a 3 day juice and water cleanse
- Use a natural binder like diatomaceous earth, zeolite or charcoal for 2 weeks (amazing in combo with parasite herbal mix)
- Avoid sugars and junk for 2 weeks to starve the parasites

It is important to regularly worm yourself and your family, parasites are a naturally occurring part of life, our microbiome is usually strong enough to fend off any nasties but sometimes they just overcome our system and take up residence. Worming yourself and your family at the onset of symptoms or at least every 3 months is essential to avoid any long term gut issues.
