Are Retained Neonatal Reflexes holding your child back?
Neonatal reflexes are also known as primitive reflexes, they are present when a child is born and they help them to survive the first couple of years of life. These primitive reflexes are just that - they help our babies feed, move around, call out for help and find mum. They're essential as an infant because the brain has not fully developed yet.
The neonatal reflexes integrate into the nervous system as the baby grows up and learns to walk and talk, use tools like pencils and forks and the rest. Sometimes, especially if there is any form of stress, the reflexes don't integrate and they persist through important years of development.
If the reflexes persist we see children that:
- Have poor impulse control
- Regularly have meltdowns that are often over-reactive to the situation
- Are scared of change or trying new things
- Have poor fine motor or gross motor skills
- Struggle to learn to read
- Have poor handwriting or dislike writing
- Hyper sensitive to sensory stimuli (sound, light, touch, food)
- Poor posture
- Poor focus and coordination
If you think your child has retained neonatal reflexes then it's best to consult with one of our Chiropractors trained in helping your kid integrate their reflexes and fast pace their development.
