ADHD, Autism, Brain Injury, Migraine and Neuro-developmental conditions: A Message of Hope

Written by Dr. Jaxson Wearing…

I spent last week in Brisbane at the Breaking Barriers Summit. it was an amazing week full of different speakers from different medical and complementary backgrounds. We all came together to explore digital therapies for neurodevelopmental conditions. My mind was blown to say the least!

The summit was an offshoot of the incredible work done by Dr. Robert Melillo. A neuroscientist and chiropractor who single handed brought together complex neurological concepts and physical therapies to create treatment plans to stimulate parts of the nervous system to balance the brain. He explains that by working to increase activity in areas of the brain that were underactive or to downregulate areas that were overstimulated there would be improvements overall in the nervous system, and often, a resolution of symptoms of neurological disorders. He used lasers, vibration tools, specific exercises, scents, taste and specialised medical digital therapeutic tools to do his work. He had incredible results and quickly gained notoriety for his work in helping children with developmental delay and in helping people with chronic neurological disability regain control over their lives. His research and information has set the functional neurological therapies world on fire! In particular he inspired Dr. Kyle Daigle of neuro-solutions to expand and continue his work in neurological conditions - an aspect that medicine has few options for healing.

I was led through lectures, workshops, demonstrations and inspirational story after story of patients overcoming immeasurable odds to gain autonomy through previously assumed irreversible neurological injury. I am talking non-verbal autistic children speaking in full sentences, assisting patients waking up from coma, patients with full spinal cord injuries learning to move their legs again, people with chronic regional pain syndrome overcoming their challenges and story after story of people healing from neurological conditions with the help of digital therapies and incredible practitioners.

The main message? There is hope.

The hope lies in alternative therapies and I will tell you why. Because alternative medicine thinks in terms of FUNCTION. We are taught as alternative therapists how the body should function optimally, from the way a cell is meant to repair itself to how cholesterol is turned into oestrogen. We study every bone of the body, every biochemical pathway and we study every neurological pathway that underpins the function of our bodies. We know exactly how we taste and smell, we know exactly how movement is integrated, controlled and smoothed out, we know the underlying physiology of our heartbeat and we know exactly how all that is altered under different conditions: be it stress, toxicity, disease or healing. It is because of this that we can see how a body function has broken down and that is how we get the ideas of how to restore the function of these systems to create healing.

The week had me reflecting on the past 12 years of my own practice as a chiropractor and kinesiologist. Through my degree in chiropractic I didn’t really know why I had chosen to become a chiropractor. I had been lost through uni, but in my first tutorial where I put my hands on someone, I knew that this work was for me. Two very important things happened to me while I was studying that has led me to where I am now. The first is that I was offered a teaching position in neurology and neuroanatomy at Macquarie University where I studied. The second most important thing that happened in my career is that I studied Applied Kinesiology alongside my final year at uni.

The combination of these two sliding door moments had me studying neurological principles and anatomy every week in preparation for teaching. I had to understand the neurology so well that I could relay it to students who were hearing it for the first time. I needed to do it in a way that they could grasp the complex information but also connect to it. I learnt very early on that without relevance or a connection to the material, students quickly became lost and overwhelmed by the complexity of it all. I worked as a tutor and lecturer for 10 years in the area of anatomy and neurology.

Studying applied kinesiology gave me the tools I would need clinically to assess and treat the different systems of the human body, and in particular, my patients nervous systems. I rounded this out by continuing my studies in neuro development, in particular, children with learning difficulties and neurodevelopmental conditions. It was through my interest in this field that I began working alongside behavioural optometrists, together we used light therapy, kinesiology, retained neonatal reflex integration and syntonics to help people heal from chronic neurological conditions. There were more days than not when we would see instant changes: children immediately able to catch and throw a ball with their new nervous system, where before treatment that same day they could not catch or even try to throw the ball back. We saw immediate changes in peoples posture and their chronic headaches disappear in real time, I saw people partially paralysed by stroke stand up, turn around and walk up the hallway after treatment.

Needless to say, last week I was excited to be back in the alternative medicine community talking of inspirational stories of patients overcoming these debilitating conditions. I was also inspired to reflect back on the amazing results we’ve had at Luminous Body by integrating these tools into our clinical practice. It gave me new insight into these past experiences with our patients. Perhaps at the time I was too naïve, maybe I was held back by fear of judgement, or maybe it just wasn’t the right time for me to own that the improvements in our patients experience was a direct result of the protocols we have been running. Attending this conference has given me the confidence to speak openly about this work in the hope that it gives you or someone you know the hope they need to pursue therapies that really work.

I came home with new tools (literally!) and techniques to apply to current patients, but also to help those in the community who have been told that they will have to live with the conditions they have. There is a way through chronic pain, neurodevelopmental challenges and brain injury. Children can learn to read and write and to do it fluently, regardless of their afflictions. It is my intention to bring more of these techniques to our community, it is my commitment to train others how to do it so that more people can be helped by these techniques. Stay tuned for more stories and case studies!
