No one and no process is above therapy…
Stay with me on this one…
No one, and no process is above therapy.
I mean this with total compassion and in service of compassion itself. Therapy is essential! no person on this planet, no book that you’ve read and no matter how self aware you are, no one is above therapy.
When I say therapy I am referring to a combination of modalities. Therapy can be bodywork, Chiropractic, acupuncture and meditation. It can be psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry, coaching, counselling, hypnotherapy and craniosacral work. In our field these are all very effective but working on yourself without some form of talk therapy is cutting yourself short of results.
Working with a therapist, especially a talk therapist with an understanding of trauma, nervous system regulation, polyvagal theory and parts work, can be like working with a mentor, guide and life coach. Their impact on your life is immeasurable.
Society taught us that you need to be broken to go to therapy, that somehow we became unable to manage our ‘stuff’ and the skeletons came out of the closet. Our parents would talk about ‘that’ person in therapy in hushed voices. Somehow, therapy became this stigmatised activity that invites plenty of judgment and gossip into ones life. We go to therapy to fix things, no wonder its been hard to imagine what working with a therapist could really bring to our lives.
At Luminous Body we talk a lot about regular care. It is so important to continually receive care, to keep the body aligned, to prevent unnecessary injuries, and to pick up on imbalances before they become more than imbalances. The same goes for talk therapy. We do body work to clear the body of physical, chemical and emotional ailments and we do talk therapy to keep our mind in shape, to maintain perspective on life and to sharpen our expression and communication skills. Going to therapy regularly means that we can unload what we’re carrying, we can talk things through woith someone before we come up with a plan of action, we can be accountable to someone. Psychotherapy guides us through life, so that we are making decisions based off our core values and integrity. Without therapy where would we learn what our values are? Where else can we explore factors that influence our level of integrity? Where else do we focus so much on ourselves and our drivers that we can lead ourselves through life and respond, rather than react?
Therapy is a seriously incredible investment. It is essential and necessary. Seeing therapist has nothing to do with being broken, mentally unwell or unfit. Seeing a therapist can be about maintaining a level of wellness that is important to us y looking after the mind, clearing it out, upgrading it here and there and to learn about yourself so that you can create and live in a better world.
